Privacy policy
Last Updated: January 2026
At Grano, we believe trust is brewed, not bought. We built Grano to be your thoughtful companion in coffee discovery, not a data broker.
This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information with the transparency and respect you deserve. We’ve stripped away the legalese to make this as clear as a well-brewed pour-over.
1. Our Core Privacy Promise
We operate on a simple principle: Your coffee journey belongs to you.
We do not sell your data. Not now, not ever.
We are "Local-First." Grano is designed to store your data on your device first, syncing to the cloud only to back it up or enable the community features you choose.
You control the social dial. Your logs are private by default unless you explicitly choose to share them with the community.
2. Information We Collect
To make Grano work, we collect three types of information:
A. Information You Give Us
Account Information: When you sign up (via Apple or Google), we receive your basic authentication details (email, user ID, and name/avatar if provided) to create your secure account.
Your Coffee Logs: The photos of coffee bags, tasting notes, ratings, and brew methods you create. This is the core of your "Grano Journal."
B. Information We Collect Automatically
Usage Data: Anonymous stats on how the app is used (e.g., "500 users searched for 'Ethiopian' today") to help us improve the app.
Device Information: Basic details about your device model and OS version to ensure the app runs smoothly.
C. What Our AI Sees (And Doesn't See)
On-Device OCR: When you scan a coffee bag, the text recognition happens on your iPhone using Apple’s Vision Framework. We prioritize on-device processing to keep your raw camera feed private.
Cloud Parsing: To structure that text into data (Roaster, Origin, Flavors), we may process the text of the coffee bag label through secure cloud services (like OpenAI). This data is transient—used only to identify the coffee—and is not used to train third-party models on your personal habits.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your data for one purpose: to help you discover and brew better coffee.
To Provide the Service: Syncing your journal across devices and backing up your data so you never lose your history.
To Personalize Discovery: Understanding that you love "Natural Process" coffees so we can recommend similar beans.
To Build Community (Optional): If you choose to contribute to the global database or share a review, we display your username and feedback to help others.
To Improve the App: Analyzing crash reports and usage patterns to fix bugs and build better features.
4. Third-Party Services & Analytics
We do not share your personal data with advertisers. We only share data with trusted infrastructure partners who help us run the service. These partners are strictly bound by privacy agreements:
Google Firebase: For secure cloud hosting, database storage, authentication, and anonymous usage analytics. Google Privacy Policy
OpenAI (API): For processing text from coffee labels into structured data. We do not allow your data to be used to train their models. OpenAI Privacy Policy
Apple: For processing "Sign in with Apple" authentication. Apple Privacy Policy
5. Your Rights & Data Retention
You are the owner of your coffee history.
Retention: We retain your personal data only as long as your account is active.
Export: You can request a copy of your data at any time.
Delete: You can delete your account and all associated data directly from the app settings. When you leave, your data leaves with you immediately from our live database and is removed from backups within 30 days.
6. Children's Privacy
Grano is for coffee lovers. We do not knowingly collect data from children under the age of 13. If we discover a child has created an account, we will delete it immediately.
7. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to—and maintained on—computers located outside of your state or country (including the United States) where data protection laws may differ. By using Grano, you consent to this transfer for the purpose of providing the service.
8. Changes to This Policy
As Grano grows (and as we add new features like the Marketplace), we may update this policy. We will notify you of any significant changes directly in the app.
